THE CRISIS

The world we once knew has been put on hold,  travel restrictions and mobility constrains are affecting the world-wide economy and our community is not immune to it. The Riviera Maya and TULUM communities live almost entirely from the millions of travelers exploring and enjoying the natural and cultural richness of our destination. Thousands of jobs have been lost, and the essential needs are no longer being met by most. This puts our communities at a huge risk.

With absolute uncertainty of the length of the lockdown the Tulum Community needs your help to sustain our relief efforts through this crisis.

THE SOLUTION:

A response program to sustain local support networks

Tulum is best known for its white sand, turquoise waters and magical lands, but today the protagonist and shining stars are its people, the people who are coming together to help this community through our current, economic, health and social and crisis.

Through this platform Papaya Playa Project seeks to sustain local initiatives actively supporting the Tulum community TODAY.  We've broken down our program into the three main areas of support we are providing: (1) FOOD for our community on a daily basis, through local kitchens and food package deliveries. (2)  Supporting active members of community (Neighborhood Heroes) addressing a breath of needs including drinking water, relocation, jungle fires and more,  (3) Supporting Mayan Communities severely affected at this time.

Multiple initiatives have sprung to answer the call of relief efforts in our communities and the needs are many. The economic halt is affecting housing, food, and security while health has no become critical at this point. The need is also felt through different socio-economic demographics and geographies. We have identified three layers of needed support.

FOOD RELIEF - The main goal is to keep our community fed. We are achieving this through supporting community kitchens by UNIDOS TULUM and BOTANICA to delivering food packages with RED SOLIDARIA and volunteers. The kitchens are currently serving 500+ free meals per day, and the food deliveries we aim to reach 2,000+ families in surrounding towns.

TULUM NEIGHBORHOOD HEROES those acting in our immediate urban town supporting, feeding and creating long lasting solutions to bring sustenance to Tulum Town. The affected here have lost their jobs.

MAYAN COMMUNITIES SUPPORT which depend on economic activity in Tulum and have no access to income, limited connectivity to the world and are in dire need of assistance.

OUR PROGRAM

We've broken down our program into the three main areas of support we are providing. Our goal is to help sustain the efforts of these initiatives by understanding their needs on a weekly basis and establish a long-term support model. Whether it is purchasing food for the community kitchens serving food for free in town, or paying for their gas bill, we've broken down their needs in order to assign the funds where it is needed the most. ALL PROCEEDS ARE 100% FOR THESE PROJECTS AND INITIATIVES.

FOOD RELIEF FOR TULUM

The main goal is to keep our community fed. We are achieving this through supporting community kitchens by UNIDOS TULUM and BOTANICA, and delivering food packages with RED SOLIDARIA and volunteers. The kitchens are currently serving 500+ free meals per day, and the food deliveries we aim to reach 5,000+ families in surrounding towns.

MAYAN COMMUNITIES SUPPORT

Mayan communities depend on economic activity in Tulum and have no access to income and have limited connectivity to the world. Main efforts include not only food packages, but also medicine and economic support via purchasing their honey and soap productions. In collaboration with local government, Movida Maya, Red Solidaria, and volunteers.

OUR PROCESS

HERE IS HOW WE ARE GOING ABOUT IT

1. IDENTIFY THE NEEDS. We’ve been paying close attention to the needs in our community throughout the unpredictable changes in this contingency and helping wherever  possible with volunteers, food, and essential purchases.

2. IDENTIFY THE MOST VULNERABLE. Through this experience and through the help of government officials, we have been able to find the specific areas in the town that need and how to reach them.

WHAT IS THIS FUNDRAISER ABOUT?

The Riviera Maya and TULUM communities live almost entirely from the Tourism industry. With the world we once knew being put on hold, the result is devastating for all. Thousands of jobs have been lost and the essential needs are no longer being met by most. This puts our communities at a huge risk.

We need to help our communities NOW, and the only way to do this is TOGETHER.
For our community in Tulum, we have joined forces with our friends from Habitas, La Encantada, LADLE, Red Sostenible, Tulum Food Bank, Comunidad Tulum and in collaboration with the Municipal and State governments, to bring the most essential help we can: FOOD. Tulum started the 1st round of food deliveries on Monday April 6th, to mayan communities in our area. However this will not be enough. We need your help to purchase more “DESPENSAS” (food boxes) to keep feeding families during this uncertain time.

WHAT IS A “DESPENSA”?

A Despensa is a “pantry” box with basic food and essentials for a family for 4 to last 7-10 days.

The supply of these items is also limited and takes time to put together, package, and deliver with current suppliers. We need to make a high-volume purchase in order to be able to help the communities soon.

HOW MUCH WE NEED

40,000+ people in tulum and surrounding villages  need support. 1 DESPENSA/ Pantry box can feed a family of 4, for 5–7 days. The cost of 1 DESPENSA is at around 350-400 pesos ($17 USD) Our goal for the next rounds of food deliveriesis to be able to purchase 5,000 DESPENSAS (be able to feed 5,000 families)and MORE in the near future!

HOW MUCH WE NEED

THE SUPPLIES
We are ordering the Despensas prepackaged in order to avoid multi-person contact with the supplies. With the Government and health authorities are supporting us in establishing protocols and training those involved for the safest handling as possible.

THE DELIVERY
Through the collaboration with other hotels, foundations and volunteers in tulum, we will be delivering door-to-door. The government has trained volunteer staff for the safest way to hand over and the sanitation procedures necessary to make this happen in a safe way.

WHEN WILL THIS HAPPEN?

The first delivery of food supplies is happening on Monday, April 6h, thanks to the hard work and collaboration between all groups involved, including the quick action of volunteers. This delivery however is only a start and does not cover the projected amount of families in urgent need.

WHERE IS THE MONEY GOING?

All proceeds will go to purchase directly with suppliers despensas and supplies to support community efforts.

HOW DO I KNOW THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING?

We will be updating on our social networks and here about each part of the process, including the amount of money raised, the purchases being done, and deliveries. You can follow all of our collaborator social media accounts here for the whole process:
